ABOUT THE WORK
Through cyanotypes, painting, and video installation, nafyar explores identity through the lens of personal memory and digital archives.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
nafyar is a Somali artist based in Minneapolis whose work focuses on excavating colonial histories and pasts. Their work is informed by their upbringing in a family affected by displacement and colonial intervention. Their practice centers the Black immigrant experience through interrogating our relationship to faith and nationalism. They explore the effects of displacement, and alienation on memory and culturemaking. With painting, collage, and sound they discuss the notions of fixed linear time that have created holes in which the misremembered and forgotten orbit.
