Through a series of large scale paintings, Hersi explores emotional states of being that shape both the present moments and fleeting memories of our human experience. From joy and hope to confusion and grief, Hersi uses portraiture, landscape, and abstraction to reflect on what we currently hold and embrace and what we will perhaps always be sifting through. A moment can hold much emotion, and emotions are what move us.
Mohamed Hersi’s artistic practice resides at the intersection of minimalism and abstract expressionism, drawing inspiration from his rich cultural heritage and personal experiences. Born in New Delhi, India following his family’s displacement from Somalia during the civil war in 1990, Mohamed immigrated to the United States at the age of 9. His artistic palette is deeply influenced by the vibrant colors and architectural marvels of his birthplace, particularly during the “Holi” festival.
